
Award Information
Awards listed below are available at each Regional Science Fair in British Columbia. Judges follow the criteria as set out below. Awards will be announced and presented at the Regional Science Fair.
Al Appleton Worksafe Award (Worker's Compensation Board of British Columbia)
- $100
To be awarded at each British Columbia Regional Science Fair to the best project demonstrating the principles of occupational hygiene. The student must have consulted with people in the community or region about the content of their project. The students must show creativity, innovation and enthusiasm in the display of the project.
The BC Agriculture in the Classroom Award (The BC Potato and Vegetable Grower's Association)
- $75
To be awarded to an outstanding project that shows the practical application of scientific principles to agriculture. Students from Grades 5 to 12 are eligible for the award.
BC Hydro Power Smart Award
- $100, Perpetual Trophy, PowerSmart Award Winner Certificate
To be awarded to a student(s) in Grades 4 to 12 who creates a project which creatively demonstrates electrical conservation and its environmental, social and economical impacts
BC Nature (Federation of British Columbia Naturalists) Award
- $50
To be awarded at each British Columbia Regional Science Fair to the best natural history project done by a student(s) in Grades 7 to 12. This includes studies of any aspect of natural history, conservation of natural habitats, or the conservation of natural species.
BCIC (British Columbia Innovation Council) Award
- $100(student), $100(teacher)
To be awarded to a student(s) who has developed a science and technology innovation with the potential to benefit British Colmbia. This joint teacher/student award is intended to recognize the efforts of the winning student(s) and the supporting teacher. Preference is given to a project selected for CWSF 2009.
BCIC (British Columbia Innovation Council) Young Innovator Award
- YES Magazine Subscription and Perpetual Trophy
To be awarded to a junior or intermediate student(s) who has shown initiative and curiosity in the selection of a topic and/or approach to the research, design or presentation of the project. The student must have consulted with people in the community or region about he content of the project. The student must show creativity, innovation and enthusiasm in the display of the project.
BCIC Young Innovator Scholarship
- Minimum $2,000
To be awarded to a senior student(s) who has developed a science and technology innovation with the potential to benefit British Columbia. The winner(s) must be selected for CWSF 2010 and to receive the award, he/she must enroll full-time upon graduation in a science and technology program in a British Columbia post-secondary institution. The awardee is not eligible for other BCIC scholarships. The award value is increased in the Southern Interior through a partnership with the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust (SIDIT).
BC Science Teachers Award
- $100
To be awarded to a student from grades 7 or 8 for an experimental project in any category that has clearly presented an hypothesis and independent, controlled variables.
Chevron Canada Ltd Award
- $100
To be awarded to a student(s) who has done a project that deals with environmental considerations (concerns) as it relates to preserving and protecting the environment for people, wildlife and habitat preservation.
Genome British Columbia Award
- $100 x 2
To be awarded to two projects dealing with a topic of genomic interest. Students in all grades are eligible for this award.
Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon Award
- Recognition Plaque
To be awarded to an outstanding cardiovascular or cerebrovascular related project.
The Michael Crooks Physics Prize - British Columbia Association of Physics Teachers (BCAPT)
- $100
To be awarded to a student(s) in grade 6 to 12 who has done an outstanding physics-related project.
SCWIST (Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology) Award
- $100, Perpetual Trophy
To be given to a female student(s) whose project shows the greatest ingenuity in the grade 8 to 10 categories. The award is intended to encourage the student's interest in science. A student may not receive this award more than once.

Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. Award
- Cash Award (as determined by each local Chapter), Perpetual Regional Trophy
To be awarded to outstanding engineering projects. Projects eligible for this award include those in the fields of chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial and mechanical engineering as well as systems design.
The BC Greenhouse Growers Association Award (A partner of BC Agriculture
in the Classroom)
- $75
To be awarded to an outstanding project that demonstrates the creative use of advanced science and technology to enhance vegetable plant productivity and quality. Projects eligible for this award include those in the area of biological pest control, irrigation, nutrition, growing media, climate control and mechanics. Available to Fraser Valley, Greater Vancouver and South Fraser Regional Science Fairs
DAWEG (Division for the Advancement of Women in Engineering and Geoscience) Award
- Cash Award (as determined by each local Academy)
To be awarded to a student who effectively and enthusiastically communicates an original solution to an engineering or hard science problem/project by applying their knowledge of science and math. Available in Greater Vancouver, Fraser Valley, South Fraser and Vancouver Island Regional Science Fairs.
To be eligible for awards listed below, projects must be nominated. Each
Regional Science Fair Judging Committee will select and nominate deserving
projects from those entries submitted to the fair. Completed nomination
forms must be sent by April 30, 2010 to:

TRCR Award (Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation)
- $500 post-secondary education scholarship
To be awarded to an outstanding project done by a grades 11 or 12 student(s) dealing with reclamation or environmental protection. Preference will be given to mining related projects. The award winner(s) will be required to submit proof of enrolment at a post-secondary institution.
W.E. Coates Award (Canadian Land Reclamation Association, BC Chapter)
- $150
To be awarded to an outstanding junior or intermediate project related to land, aquatic or marine environment reclamation and/or rehabilitation.
The recipients of the award listed below will be selected from the British Columbia student's projects that participate in the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). Nomination forms need not be submitted. All students attending the CWSF are automatically eligible.
Association of Professional Biologists Award
- $100, Newsletter Subscription (BC Association of Professional Biologists)
To be awarded to the British Columbia student(s) who achieves the highest standing at the Canada-Wide Science Fair with a project of a biological nature.
Ministry Of Transportation Award
- $100 (Junior), $100 (Intermediate), $1000 (Senior), Scholarship for
Post-Secondary Education
To be awarded to British Columbia student(s) attending the Canada-Wide Science Fair for an outstanding project in each age category that shows the practical application of scientific principles to identifying and addressing a transportation-related issue.
MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Alumni of BC Award
- $100
To be awarded to a project that demonstrates informed curiosity, exploration, and discovery as well as the practical potential for real world application and entrepreneurship..
Vancouver RASC Martha Pearce Award (Royal Astronomical Society Vancouver Centre)
- $500
To be awarded to the best astronomy or physics project that demonstrates creativity, innovation and contributes to a greater public understanding of science.
